TOBY CAPLAN-STONEFIELD, FLUTIST

(FLUTE, PICCOLO, ALTO FLUTE, BASS FLUTE, CONTRA BASS FLUTE)

TOBY CAPLAN-STONEFIELD, flutist, became a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the age of twenty, and has played under the direction of more than thirty of the world’s greatest conductors. Since that time, she has been in the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra, Ojai Festival Arts Orchestra, Glendale Symphony, Monday Evening Concerts Series, Ensembles for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Greek Theatre Ballet Orchestra, and principal flute for the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera. Toby has performed music for the film industry at Universal, Disney, and Paramount Studios, and was principal flutist for MGM’s production of “Dr. Zhivago”. She has performed many solo recitals throughout the Southern California area, performed as soloist with orchestras, premiered works written especially for her, and performed twice as soloist for the National Flute Association Convention. (She was co-chair of local arrangement for the Los Angeles Convention in ’92.)

She performs regularly with her Flute Magic Ensembles: Flute & Guitar; Flute & Harp; Flute, Cello & Piano; Flute, Violin, Viola, & Cello; Flute, Piano, Bass & Drums; or simply Flute & Piano. In 2002 she founded and is the director of the “Conejo Valley Flute Society” which was featured at the National Flute Association’s Convention held in Las Vegas, Aug. 2003. From 1996-2001 Toby was principal flutist for the Valley Symphony Orchestra. She is in demand as a master class teacher, clinician, and adjudicator.

Toby attended USC, Music Academy of the West on scholarship, and is a graduate of Drake University School of Fine Arts. She has studied with Elise Baxter Moennig, Doriot Anthony Dwyer (a student of Joseph Mariano), Luella Howard, Roger Stevens (Mariano), Nathan Jones (a student of William Kincaid), and George Drexler (a student of Georges Barrere). She has taught at the Beverly Hills Unified School District, California State University at Northridge, California State University at Los Angeles, Los Angeles Pierce College, and has been chair of the Wind Department of the Southern California Conservatory of Music since 1987. She continues to be very active in the Music Teachers Association of California, and has been selected for Who’s Who in Music 10th Edition and the 1998 Edition of Who’s Who Among Americas Teachers. Several of her former students are now playing professionally.

Her recently released CD “Music for your Enjoyment” from Hollywood, Paris and a little Brazil featuring Flute and Guitar; as well as “The Spiritual Flute” Vol. 1, featuring Music by Jewish Composers, and others with Spiritual Qualities; and her two volume CD “Music for the Millennium” – (Vol 1 - 20th Century Favorites for Flute and Piano), (Vol 2 – Varied Selections for Flute and Harp) are available at www.FluteWorld.com and www.CDBaby.com as well as the cassette recording entitled “Easy Listening Program”. ROBERT CALVA

(GUITAR)

ROBERT CALVA began playing guitar in Houston, Texas, at the age of twelve. He soon discovered blues-rock music and realized that it was the music he most wanted to play. Robert began playing professionally at the age of seventeen in Houston and the surrounding area. After playing professionally for five years, he decided to go to college and study music. Robert attended the University of North Texas and later attended Musicians Institute. While a student at MI, Robert was given the Outstanding Student of the Year Award for 1991-92. Robert began teaching at MI in 1993. He has played with Bo Diddley, Tim Bogert, Chevy Chase, Floyd Radford, Deacon Jones, Joe Houston, and countless others. He has performed for Buddy Ebson and Chevy Chase and has partied with the Monkees. He currently teaches at MI and performs in Southern California and throughout the United States as a freelance musician.
